About the Trainers

Michelle Kay Miller began teaching in San Luis Obispo in 1996 after being inspired as a junior in Southern California, riding at Baycrest Farms under Cyndi Merritt. Showing throughout her junior years on the southern California circuits, Michelle found the warm up ring as her favorite place to be, watching the early morning lessons, and coming to understand HOW what happened in the horseshow ring really was a result of all the practice and hardwork that came before.

Michelle's passion lies with teaching kids and helping them understand ALL aspects of horse/pony care. We have no grooms at First Step Farm, kids as young as 5 are able to saddle their own ponies and lead them to the arena. We emphasize safety but we have ALOT of fun.

Lessons

Most lessons are taught as private or semi-private (2 people)

Lessons typically last an hour and for the smaller kids this will include supervised tacking and/or un-tacking.

On Saturdays we have morning horsemanship class (9-12) which is offered to students on a consistent riding schedule who want a few more hours at the ranch and who want to learn about what truly is involved in horse ownership. Students are expected to be on their best behavior (as usual) and to be helpful with whatever types of chores we do besides our riding lesson. These activities include cleaning tack, mucking stalls, blanketing or unblanketing, grooming, bathing, lunging or whatever else michelle can think of!
